Yes, but the unit is required to be EPA II or Colorado III certified. Boulder Stove only sells these units that are certified. There are some allowances if you live above 7,000 ft. Call your local retailer for details.
Yes! Keeping the pilot light on during the cold months will keep the venting from building up back pressure and allow the unit to ignite during the cold months with no issues or delays, and keeps moisture off the glass.
Yes, if it is a wood or pellet unit, you will need to get the chimney/venting swept annually and inspected for safety. If it is a gas appliance, annual service and cleaning is highly recommended.
There is a difference between these units, and the applications are completely different. A "fireplace" goes into a blank sheet rock 2x4 wall which requires wood framing. An "insert" will go inside an existing wood-burning fireplace to convert it to either gas, pellet, or a high-efficiency wood insert. The existing fireplace needs to be inspected and up to code. If it is a zero-clearance wood fireplace, the installer will check the UL listing to determine if an insert is allowed to be installed.
Depending on the age, condition, and brand of the chimney/vent system, it is possible, but unlikely. Generally, we replace the entire system when purchasing a new appliance for the safety and longevity of the pipe. Inspection will determine if it is possible.
The insulation value of the home, ceiling height, and square footage of the room will determine which size unit is appropriate. The BTU range of units is listed on the brochure, or on the manufacturer's website. Sales personnel will provide details as to if the unit is an appropriate fit for your room/home.
Customer service and professional installation is very important to ensure that the purchase and installation go smoothly and is safe! Many follow-up questions and situations can arise and it is worth your time and money to purchase from a reputable retailer close to your home!
You should keep the wood fuel stored out of the weather and off the ground, preferably in a garage or shed out of the elements. The moisture content of the wood should be 17% or less before burning. A cut tree should be seasoned 1 year prior to burning. The purchase of a moisture meter is an essential tool in determining the moisture content of wood prior to burning.
Appliances are UL listed and tested with specific log sets, stone sets, and interior media options. To ensure the safety and performance of the appliance, purchase what is offered for that specific unit determined by the make/model/serial number of your specific fireplace/stove/insert. Do not install any products that are not brand/model specific!
Read the owner's manual for your new appliance! Many times homeowners can save hundreds to thousands of dollars in unnecessary service calls if they read the manual and become familiar with the functions of the unit!
